We recently had a number of copyrights registered with the U.S. Copyright Office for a series of cartoons authored by artists in Greece and Israel. The processing time to register the copyrights was approximately 15 days.
U.S. copyright law provides copyright protection for cartoons that are considered to be works of the visual arts. Cartoons can also be considered a literary work if text elements are preponderant in the cartoon or comic script. A cartoon is a simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way, especially a satirical one in a newspaper or magazine about politics or events in the news.
A copyright is a form of intellectual property law that protects original works including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, artwork, drawings, and architecture, among others. To register a copyright in the United States, you must submit a copyright application with the required fee with the US Copyright office. Foreign individuals and companies (non-US citizens or residents) can register works for copyright protection with the office. After the Copyright Office has registered your application, you can bring an action for copyright infringement, demand a cease and desist and obtain certain remedies, such as damages stipulated by law and attorney’s fees.
