Do gyms need a license in Florida?
Yes, you need a Florida state license to open a gym anywhere in Florida. The business license and permit you need to operate a gym in the state of Florida is called a Health Studio license. In addition, some health studios (gyms) must post bond or other financial security for a limited time. Operating as a Health Studio without being properly licensed is a violation of Chapter 501, Part I, Florida Statutes.
To apply for a gym license you need to file a Health Studio Registration Application with the application fee and supporting documents with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in Tallahassee Florida (FDACS). The processing time is 15 business days.
However, if the application is deficient, FDACS issues Notice of Deficiency within 30 days of receiving your application to enable you to correct the cited deficiencies for further review by the Department. You must respond to the Notice of Deficiency within 30 days from your receipt of the Notice, otherwise the application will be denied.
If the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services approves your Health Studio (gym) application, then it will mail your gym license to the mailing address listed on the application.

Gym licenses and permits cost in Florida
Each health studio (gym) location must pay the $300 annual registration fee is $300. This means that if you have multiple gym locations in the state of Florida or even in the same city, you need to pay $300 for each health studio or gym business location you operate.
Do boxing gyms need a license?
Yes, you need a Health Studio license to open a boxing gym in the state of Florida. The Florida Health Studio Act requires health studios, including boxing gyms, to register with FDACS.
A health studio in Florida is “any person who is engaged in the sale of services for instruction, training, or assistance in a program of physical exercise or in the sale of services for the right or privilege to use equipment or facilities in furtherance of a program of physical exercise. The term does not include an individual acting as a personal trainer.”
