Success! We recently celebrated another K1 visa approved in Ecuador, Guayaquil. This case was unique because the U.S. citizen petitioner had been living abroad with his fiancée in Ecuador for the past couple of years.
The K1 visa application began with the filing of Form I-129F (Petition for Alien Fiancé) with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS approved the I-129F and all supporting documents within just 6 months of the initial application.
Once approved, the case was transferred to the National Visa Center (NVC) and ultimately to the U.S. Consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador for the final interview. While the USCIS approval was issued in June 2025, the consulate scheduled the interview for later in the year. We are happy to share that the K1 visa was officially approved in late December 2025, allowing the couple to start their new year together in the United States.

The K1 visa wait time in Guayaquil, Ecuador can fluctuate based on local consulate staffing and the volume of applicants. Currently, the transition from USCIS approval to the final interview in Guayaquil is taking approximately 6 to 8 months.
Essential K1 Visa Requirements
To secure an approval at the U.S. Consulate, both the U.S. sponsor and the Ecuadorian fiancé must meet strict legal and financial requirements.
1. Sponsor Eligibility
The petitioner must be a U.S. citizen. Please note that Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) are not eligible to sponsor a fiancé.
2. Legal Freedom to Marry
Both partners must be legally “free to marry.” If either party has a previous marriage, you must provide certified copies of divorce decrees, annulments, or death certificates.
3. The “Two-Year” Meeting Rule
You must prove that you have met in person at least once within the two years immediately preceding the filing of your petition. In our recent Guayaquil case, the couple exceeded this requirement by living together in Ecuador, which provided excellent proof of a genuine relationship.
4. Financial Support & Affidavit of Support
The U.S. sponsor must demonstrate the ability to financially support the fiancé so they do not become a “public charge.” At the Guayaquil consulate interview, the applicant must present:
The sponsor must meet the USCIS Federal Poverty Guidelines for their specific household size.
Important 2026 Update: The Adjudication Pause
As of January 1, 2026, USCIS and the Department of State have implemented an adjudication pause for certain immigration benefits for nationals of 39 specific countries.
While Ecuador is not currently on this restricted list, it is vital to stay informed. If your fiancé holds dual citizenship with one of the affected nations, you may face significant processing delays or interview cancellations.
