Effective January 22, 2025, USCIS has updated its policy regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for applicants seeking to adjust status to lawful permanent residents (green cards).
The agency has eliminated the requirement to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination on Form I-693, the Report of Medical Examination for I-485 Adjustment of Status Applicants.
USCIS will no longer issue Requests for Evidence (RFEs) or Notices of Intent to Deny (NOIDs) related to COVID-19 vaccination status for Adjustment of Status applicants. This reverses USCIS October 1, 2021 policy requiring all applicants who must submit a medical examination to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series.
This policy change aligns with the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) §212(a)(1)(A)(ii), which does not consider the lack of a COVID-19 vaccination as grounds for denying an immigration application.
I-485 Adjustment of Status Applicants: Medical Examination Requirement
Individuals applying for a green card (lawful permanent residence) via I-485 Adjustment of Status in the United States must submit Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, along with their Form I-485. This medical examination is a mandatory part of the immigration process and is conducted by a designated USCIS civil surgeon. The medical examination assesses the applicant’s health status to ensure they do not have any communicable diseases that could pose a public health risk to the United States. It also verifies that the applicant has received the required vaccinations.
