Effective November 12, 2019, the United States Department of State (DOS) has reduced the validity period for E2 investor visa for citizens of France to only 25 months per E2 visa issuance. This is the second time over a three months period, the DOS changed the reciprocity schedule for France for E2 investor visa for the US.
Up until recently, French citizens, like other European countries, could obtain an US E2 investor visa for 5 years (60 months). However, in August 2019, the DOS announced that the E2 visa validity period for French nationals would be reduced from 60 months (5 years) to 15 months (1 year and 3 months) effective August 29, 2019. Later, the change was postponed and became effective on September 26, 2019.
On November 12, 2019, the E2 visa validity period for France was again changed, this time to 25 months (2 years and 1 month). According to the U.S. Embassy in France at that time, the reduction in validity time on E2 visas was implemented to correspond with the “treatment afforded to U.S. citizens by the Government of France”
Currently, French citizens can obtain an E2 investor visa for the US for a maximum period of 25 months as opposed to 60 months previously enjoyed. The E2 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows a citizen of an E2 treaty country to live and work in the United States. The amount of time an E2 investor visa is granted varies by country and depends on the agreement between the United States and the applicant’s country of citizenship.
The E2 visa policies are country-specific based on the reciprocity between the United States and the E2 applicant’s country. Some countries have reciprocity periods of as little as 3 months while other countries allow applicants to get an E2 visa for up to 5 years.
The E2 investor visa validity period for a majority of the European countries is 5 years (60 months). However, while countries in Europe like Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, North Macedonia, Netherlands, Spain enjoy a 5-year validity period for US E2 investor visas, other countries in Europe have shorter validity periods – Slovakia 2 years, Poland 1 year, Norway 3 years, Sweden 2 years, Switzerland 4 years, Ukraine 3 months.
